Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum)

  • Growth & Habitat: Perennial herb, up to 3 feet tall. Found in dry to moist woods, woodland edges, and dappled meadows. Prefers part shade to full shade, rich acidic soil, and medium moisture. Adaptable to various conditions.  Self spreading by rhizomes.

  • Blooming: Flowers from March to July, with colors ranging from pink to white to lavender. Deadheading prolongs blooming.

  • Wildlife & Insects: Seeds attract Mourning Doves, Bobwhite Quail, and White-tailed Deer. Provides special value to native and bumble bees.

  • Medicinal Uses: Historically used in teas and rinses for diarrhea, sore throats, thrush, and mouth ulcers. Dried roots used to promote blood clotting.

  • Garden Use: Suitable for Eastern shade gardens, fern gardens, and woodland slopes. Features conspicuous flowers and interesting foliage.
